-You’ve Got Mail-

A month ago I attended a Birthday BBQ. It was a lot of fun, but one of the best moments of the night (for me) was when some of the guests found out who I was.

“You’re Jak?!”

When someone exclaims that I’m torn on how to answer, because the reasoning behind it could be negative just as much as it could be positive. I’d only met some of them one other time roughly a year ago during holiday events. Did I offend someone? I swear a lot and speak “off the cuff”... occasionally. Were these people “Friends” or “Foes”? It’s important to know these things.

Turns out they’ve been receiving notifications (via Gmail) when I make a post on my blog. I found that odd, considering I never had them added to my social networks like Facebook — let alone Google+. So my settings have been sending out emails to people outside mutual circles. The cool thing? They didn’t really care, they just never knew who the hell I was.

So I joked about being the most famous person they’ll never know, made some new friends, and experimented. Finishing up a blog post while at said BBQ, I posted and waited. Moments later I heard chimes on multiple cell phones of friends and guests at the party. I laughed maniacally; mission accomplished. I’m easily amused.

Skip ahead to another party amongst a different group of friends, though, and I was met with a different tone. I received my first — officially voiced anyhow— complaint. I was asked if I could change that setting; turn it off. I felt bad, but after contemplation I figured there were ways to stop receiving said notifications... I’d seen the option myself when receiving notifications from fellow bloggers. So I explained this, but for a few weeks have been contemplating changing those settings.

I understand how it could be incredibly annoying during daily blog hop/challenges. Now with those ending, and my posting being a lot more infrequent, I haven’t worried too much about it. IF, however, it really pisses off the majority of my readers... then that’s a different story. I can just take a tally and make a personal “circle” for people specifically not interested in receiving email notifications when I make a post. The goal isn’t about irritating people, that’s for sure, but a lot of times — with following so many blogs — I wish more I followed used the email notifications. It would help me keep track of where I’m at and who I have yet to catch up with in terms of visiting.

Many posts are lost in my “feed” now.

Regardless of what is decided, I will always send out a notification for my fiction blog. The time lapse between entries there is usually weeks, if not months. So that one people will just have to suck up and endure!

Basically, I’m leaving it up to individuals to let me know if they want to be removed from circles I send notifications to, and believing in their ability to stop the notifications on their end (which I’d imagine most have done already).

INCOMING!

If you haven’t already stopped notifications and would like me to shift you to a non-notified Google+ Circle let me know. If needing help figuring out how to regulate the notifications from your end, I’m sure with our powers combined we can come up with a solution.

  1. This has happened to me. I had my blog linked to my Google + profile and I usually shared all updates after I did a post. Later I would go back and reshare not realizing that I might be pissing a few people off. One guy messaged me and said I was spamming him. I was mortified to say he least caz honestly it wasn't intentional. I share only publicly now and I've disabled my link to Google +. No complaints now but less traffick. But my followers are awesome about commenting so I don't really care....I like your pings. Keep l
    Pinging me.

    1. Yeah I'm not sure how all the linking works exactly, but I figured in the end it isn't worth worrying about. Never had someone say I was spamming them. I know sometimes (like on Twitter for example) people post 3 times. Once in the morning/afternoon/evening, being so many people are around at different times and "feeds" get flooded.

I plan to ping away! Hahaha

  2. Good Post... I'm still trying to figure out the frickin google+ thing what with the Circles and such... I mean, I get that they were hoping to replace 'the Face Book' and I totally applaud that effort....but their site (google+) is very confusing.

Having said that, I am trying to learn to use their hangout app... so I get something from your Post (not the famous/be recognized part*) but the idea of not annoying people in my circle when I experiment with the hangout thing.

(Hey, Jak... you wanna participate in a a video conference call about the Wakefield Doctrine sometime?...lol no, don't answer right now...think about it )

Got to go and beat my head against the wall, real and metaphysical, as my favorite hop (FTSF) is due tomorrow morning and I do not have a clue what I gonna write, yo

    1. Clark, I agree! I find G+ to be fairly confusing and not very user friendly. I may just be a complete nOOb, and I'm sure a handful of my friends who use it believe so, but I think they could do a little more work on it.

Hahaha it should have been "famous", but yeah... I've never used the caming/hangout yet either. Some people I know do, and I may have to give it a go at some point here.

If you want to do a conference call with ALL the fancy peeps and muck it up with my presence I don't think I could say no to that! Ha

Need to head over and view your Hops! I thought Christine did the FTSF too, but don't recall one last week.

And I'll maybe try it out sometime. The music one is still on the fence >.<

  3. Ironically, Madam Usagi and I were sitting together and both our phones blooped and we got this post. We laughed.

I feel that it is the receiver's responsibility to moderate the stuff they receive. It's not difficult to tick a box that says you don't want it anymore.

    1. I wish I was there :) I like hearing the bloop on multiple phones now... I may have an issue.

And I agree. Wish we could have hung out last week. This week is likely a no go on my end. Except maybe Tue.

  4. haha, if you mean me, that wasn't really intended as a complaint! I don't understand G+ either and I thought it was a mailing list you could just delete me from, since I get your updates in FB and Blogger anyway.

    1. Muahahahahaha! Indeed! Maybe it was your scrunched up face when you said it. I thought you were channeling Number 5. lol Just kidding... sort of. What is the blogger update? See there is Blogger and G+ and they are intermixed, but yet not? I don't understand it at all.

I mainly worried about people on FB/Twitter receiving ALL the notifications. Most only receive a G+ note.

  5. Gah this is freaking awesome. I just added you to my G+ circle crap thing because I want to be one of the dicks at the party who receives a notification from your latest post on my phone. Is that weird?

    1. Not going to lie, you are a little odd ;-) but it's a good thing.

      I think...

Thanks for the add! Prepare to get beeped!

      Hmmmm...

  6. How fun to be 'recognized' :) I don't really do google plus, so I don't use it to share my posts. I don't share on Facebook, either. My blog is never gonna be famous, I guess ;)

I wouldn't worry at all about people not wanting the notifications...like you said, they can opt out.

    1. Hahaha yeah " " is right as recognized isn't quite accurate :-) Google+ is a bit confusing to me. It seems they have a lot of room to improve their layouts and functions.

To be honest, I rarely get "likes" or many "shares" unless my little readouts per post are inaccurate. I don't know how it all works as they are functions I added after the fact from sites I read online. Like the sidebar "share" tab to the left and the little button at the end of my post.

I don't strive for this blog to ever be "famous" as it's more of a journal blog. If I did reviews, or the like, it would be nice.
