A to Z 2014 : DESTINY

(An A to Z 2014 Challenge Entry)

Fate and Destiny. While generally interchangeable, one is divinely dictated, the other humanistically shapeable. But many times the two are intertwined; woven together by the fabric of Life. The subject of Fate and Destiny can be, has been, and — likely — forever to be argued about until the End of Times. Some people subscribe to the belief that our lives are completely predetermined. What we do, the choices we make, is already softly imprinted in our life-path’s DNA, so to speak. We are merely going through the motions. Others argue that belief takes away all notions of having free will/choice, making it null and void, and refuse to accept that as reality.

Whichever you believe, one’s Destiny is to be claimed. To be taken and triumphed and heralded. There comes a time when we all must make the choice to either reach out and embrace it, or cower and let it slip away. That moment exists for me, for you, for everyone.

However, this is not one of those moments…

Become Legend

This Fall (9/9/2014) heralds Destiny into existence. Destiny is an upcoming MMO (though, Bungie defines it as a “shared-world” over MMO) style first-person shooter (FPS) designed by Bungie, the creators of the widely popular and successful Halo series. Bungie recently passed the Halo baton to a new company (343 Industries), and will finally be able to offer a new gaming franchise, even if some aspects look very similar to Halo. No reason to completely trash a good thing, right?

Destiny is one of the most anticipated games of 2014. It was meant to be a launch title for the next-gen XBox and Playstation systems (Sorry PC players!), but unfortunately was pushed back to ensure a more polished product. This seems to be a common excuse in the gaming world lately. I would be hesitant about the game (XBox 360 version of Titanfall anyone?) if it weren’t being produced by Bungie. Having followed along with their previous franchise, I have a lot of faith that they will do Destiny justice. They’ve always been very passionate with their creations and close to their community. I don’t feel they are attempting to pull the wool over the eyes of millions of fans by blowing smoke, followed by releasing a sub par product.

Then again, they are now associated with Activision… *sigh*

The Story

The skinny? In a post-apocalyptic world, there is one sole surviving city. That city is being protected by something dubbed “The Traveler” and everyone is clueless as to WTF it is, but it’s keeping them alive so ain’t no one trippin’...

Various hostile alien races are attempting to overtake the city. This leaves the Guardians, harnessing power bestowed to them via The Traveler, protecting the city and fighting to reclaim the planet.

I’m sure along the way things get bad — like real bad — and shit gets real. And the digital you will have to embrace your destiny, or die trying!

The Pack

In Destiny you can chose a character (referred to as Guardians) among three Races: Human, Awoken, and Exo; and three Classes: Titan, Warlock, or Hunter. Each class has their own unique strengths, skills, and abilities.

It’s been reported that there will be extensive character customization, in both personal appearance (physical and armor) and skills. This is one of the most important aspects for me in any game. Customization. I want to have as much of it as I can have, and it sounds like Bungie is ready to deliver that on multiple levels. From characters, to vehicles, to weapons, and even game modes.

All You Need Is Kill

Play It Your Way

Bungie is offering multiple ways to play Destiny, so you can tailor your experience to your own playstyle. Because it’s an MMO (or “shared-world”), you can easily go from playing solo to joining up with friends on the fly. Or you can team up with complete strangers if that’s your cup of tea.

I think one of the funnest parts of the game, aside from competitive Player Vs. Player, will be the random Public Events that will be taking place as you explore the world. During these events, anyone and everyone can join in and participate. It’s not a new concept, but I believe Bungie will develop them soundly. I just find it a lot of fun becoming involved with an in-game event that gives the feeling that you aren’t alone and are, as a community, attempting to accomplish a common goal.

There is so much I feel I could say about Destiny, but none of it is really new news. It’s been a slow, tantalizing process with released information. The Beta is coming this Summer, but exclusively to PS3/4 first, which is a bummer as I’m an XBoxer. When it does hit the XBox One, though, I will definitely be spending a good chunk of time on it. Perhaps I can give a Beta review. Maybe even a full review when the game is officially released this September.

Ah, this September. This is when the Ladyfolk discovers I’ve gone missing and can no longer be found in the real world, as I will be embracing my in-game Destiny (as well as the physical copy of the game… perhaps even while sleeping).

I’ve posted it before, again there has been little in terms of new footage, but I really like this promotional video for the game and thought I would end with it. You may recognize the actor from Breaking Bad and/or Revolution. Enjoy!

The Law Of The Jungle

Are you looking forward to Destiny? If so, what Race and Class are you planning to play as? What system will you be playing on? Will you be participating in the Beta? I apologize for that false intro… but not really!

  1. I liked how you started this post broadly with a definition of destiny and then narrowed it in to specifically talk about the game. I must admit, the graphics look stunning, especially the ones above with the sunsets (or sunrises) and cars and players. Video game design is certainly an art skill I have come to admire immensely, even though I don't play myself. I just simply cannot imagine how many hours goes into such beautiful creations when it is done right (like it appears Destiny has).

I know, I know, you will be lost to the world. Thank god the release is after my birthday, or otherwise I might flip a lid. :P

You can hold onto your copy of the game, just as long as it doesn't interfere with our lovins, if you catch my drift. If it does, well, then I know something is seriously wrong.

    1. I agree, its definitely an art skill I have come to appreciate (ages ago really), and it becomes better and better as time goes on. Soon, maybe games will be in that 4k business or even something crazier! It will only cost you a bazillion bucks to purchase everything needed.

No worries, I don't think there will be any interference with that! :p Otherwise, yes, something would be seriously wrong.

  2. Thanks for enlightening us about the game. I can't say I'll ever play it, even now knowing of its epic nature, but it certainly sounds fun.

As for free will? My husband (a philosophy grad) shuts down the argument with this: "Whether or not we have free will, we will always live as though we do." :D Can't argue with that one.

    1. Hi hi, Raquel :) Yeah, being a gamer I'm surprised I haven't attracted more readers of that nature, but I really don't push that particular subject matter. My stuff is all pretty random. It's something I'm passionate about, though, and so I like to delve into it now and again. I'm glad you still take the time to check it out! It's very much appreciated!

It's pretty hard to argue that logic. Even if it were divine, so to speak, you wouldn't exactly know the difference.

I have had your "E" up since last night, but will have to wait to get to it fully until after a play we are heading off to. Be there soon!

  3. I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about, but I'm glad that YOU'RE so excited about this! In a nutshell, it's Candy Crush on steroids and crack, right?

    1. I am excited! And yes, it's pretty much Candy Crush on Michael Bay!

  4. It's a shame that this won't(or atleast I'm assuming from your post that it won't) appear on xbox 360 my eldest would love this game. Hell, even I'm tempted and I do NOT game on any level other than utterly useless *sigh*

    1. Actually, this game will be available on both current and Next-Gen consoles, so XBox 360, XBox One, PS3, and PS4. It will be absent from PC, which Bungie tends to do. One thing that sucks about the versions of each system is they will all have their own servers. This means people on Xbox 360 and XBox One won't be able to play together. That part sucks, but I understand why they are going that route.

That was one of my biggest dilemmas. I wanted it on the XBox One just for the sheer graphics end of things, especially if I plan to possibly play it in the long run, but a good handful of friends only had the 360. Now that's shifted and more are buying XBox One systems, so I will be able to make just the single purchase, rather than multiple to play with different friends on different systems.

Anyway, your son will be able to enjoy this, and you can have a taste of it yourself, on the XBox 360. Though, I do think the XBox One isn't too shabby of a purchase :)

Oh My Nuts! Leave a message already, would ya?!
