A to Z 2014 : QUALITY TIME

(An A to Z 2014 Challenge Entry)

Tonight the Ladyfolk and I just wrapped up Easter with my family. My mother is still having a traditional dinner tomorrow, as well, but this year was challenging for the entire family to make it. In fact, I believe only one of my siblings will be going tomorrow, while some of us others attended a more impromptu gathering today.

No ham was on the menu (that’s for tomorrow), only spaghetti. And mashed potatoes. Those were my idea! And an abundance of snacks and treats that could easily put a diabetic into a sugar-induced coma. Except for me, because I’m pretty awesome at eating all the sugary things and surviving somehow.

Before eating dinner, the Ladyfolk, my brother, and I played Boss Monster. Finally! This was the first time I had played it since buying it weeks ago. We technically didn’t even get to finish our game before dinner was ready, because we were playing extra slow, taking our time for the first play through.

This game is completely designed around 8-bit video games! I love it!
From what little we played, I thought it was fun, and it will go a lot faster now that we have an idea of how it works. Looking forward to trying it again.

After eating dinner, and before we tackled some sweets, we all decided to play another game I brought along called Dixit Journey. Except for my brother who was too tired and went to pass out on the couch. Loser.

I love the art of the cards in this game!
I had played Dixit Journey before, but this was the first time playing my copy, which I bought months ago. It was definitely a success! Everyone playing had a blast. So much so we even played two rounds, and honestly I could have played another.

Once we were done gorging on dessert, I announced I had one last family friendly game to play (Cards Against Humanity) if anyone was interested. They were, but as time passed and our food began to settle, we decided to pass for the evening. Next time…

It was a great day and evening with my family and some good ‘ol quality time I’m looking forward to repeating come the next big family/holiday event.

Tomorrow it’s off to the Ladyfolk’s side of the family for their Easter, and the bonus celebration of one of her nephew’s first birthday. It should be another great night!

When was the last time you had some good quality time with family and loved ones? This weekend is likely to be one for most. What Easter plans, if any, do you have planned? Have you ever played Boss Monster, Dixit, or Cards Against Humanity? If so, what are your thoughts/opinions? I may attempt to highlight the games individually at some point, to give a better idea of how they are played.

A random movie I decided to watch on a whim, thinking it looked funny. It was pretty funny... and vulgar!

  1. I had a really great day! I enjoyed the games as well, and definitely think Boss Monster will only get more fun now that I actually kinda understand how to play. Pretty sure I could have played Dixit another round too. I REALLY like that game. COH would have been fun... but might be even better with more fam there. Next time, indeed.

Looking forward tomorrow. Pretty sure you will get your ham and more potatoes there!

Thanks for the funny, and slightly creepy Easter bunny photo.

    1. I'm glad you had fun! Really glad you branched out and tried Boss Monster too. I was thinking there was the strong possibility of you passing on it. Knew you would love Dixit, though, and was excited everyone enjoyed it. It will be worthwhile picking up those expansions!

CAH will be played by all!

Looking forward to more potatoes... some of us aren't crazy finicky picky eaters :-)

Perhaps you will have to watch Hank and Mike someday.

  2. We actually didn't have a family gathering for Easter this year. We went to church in the morning, but then stayed home for the rest of the day, since it was our first beautiful 70 degree day. I worked out in the yard all day long! We ate colorful egg salad for lunch, since we had umpteen hard boiled eggs. All in all, great Easter!

That may seem odd, but I live in a unique situation. I see my family All. The. Time. My parents, grandparents, in-laws, brothers and their wives, most uncles and aunts, all live within ten miles of me. My parents, my husband's parents, and my husband's brother actually live within one mile of me. So, yeah. We see each other a lot! And, we frequently gather. I know most people don't have that luxury.

    1. Hmm that is odd! Most families, I think, even if in close proximity and seeing one another often, generally still partake in the holiday festivities offered! Unless there are possibly religious conflicts, maybe? It was a beautiful day here too! I'm glad you were able to enjoy the fine weather :-) I was actually outside! In the sunlight! Actually, many people I know got sunburned.

Many of my immediate family are within 20 minutes, but now my mother living over an hour away makes holidays more difficult. I think we try as best we can to make it to the holidays now because we can't see her as often.

I avoided all hard-boiled eggs! And coloring of eggs lol My mother and brother's fiance made some and their fingers and hands were rainbow colored the entire day. Whatever dyes they used didn't wash out easily...

    2. I guess nobody felt like cooking. My brothers both had gatherings on the other side of the house. I don't know. I rather enjoyed the day.

    3. I think your day sounded fantastic... short of maybe some fun games!

  3. My in-laws like to pull out cool games at get togethers too, like Seven Wonders and Settlers of Canton. :)

    1. That's awesome, David. I have only played Settlers of Catan a few times, but enjoy it. Good luck getting my mother to play that, though lol I've wanted to play Seven Wonders, but don't know anyone who owns it. I prefer to see the games or play with them before purchasing. Unless it's Boss Monster... was clueless going into that purchase... design sold me there.

  4. We like to play Catch-Phrase at gatherings. It's fun, but I mostly like the gatherings for the food. :-)
Sounds like you had a good day.
I'm glad to be your newest blog follower, and I hope to see your around the A to Z!

    1. I've heard of and seen Catch-Phrase, but I don't believe I have played it yet. It seems to be a very popular party game, though.

The food is generally the main attraction! It was a great day, and the following after.

Thanks for stopping by, and following along, Deb. I will be retuning the favor soon!

  5. There's nothing wrong with spaghetti and mashed potatoes, as long as they don't TOUCH each other. Carbs and refined sugars are our friends!

Bananagrams is my game of choice, because I'm really. really good at it.

    1. No touching! My mother had bowls and plates for us to decide how to dish it up. I used the bowl for spaghetti, with a spoon and fork, which I've been told is the traditional way to eat it? Never looked it up, but yeah. Then the plate for the mashed potatoes!

      Never played Bananagrams >.<

    2. We use divided plates at our house.

    3. Of course you do... I wouldn't expect anything less!

Oh My Nuts! Leave a message already, would ya?!
